George Draper Dayton II (9/21/1907-10/13/1988) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to David Draper Dayton and Louise Winchell Dayton Denman. He was a grandson of George Draper Dayton, the founder of Dayton’s. He was educated at Whittier School (1913-1918), Blake School (class of 1924), Princeton University (class of 1928). Newton Horace Winchell came to Minnesota in 1872 when the Legislature offered him $1,000 to complete the first geological survey of the state. He was the first person to map Minnesota's geology and mineral deposits; he discovered the valuable low-grade iron ore deposits of the Mesabi and Vermilion ranges.
